The Alluvians is a gay men’s social group based in Castlemaine (about 130km north of Melbourne) and with men attending events from across the Mount Alexander Shire and surrounding areas. They are a small, unincorporated, volunteer run, not-for-profit social group that provides a safe, non-judgmental welcoming environment for gay, bi and trans men in Castlemaine and surrounding area. The Alluvians provide several different opportunities to socialise for retired and working men.
PFA awarded small grant funding to The Alluvians towards their a series of health seminars titled Living and Ageing Well as Rural GBTQ Men. The health seminars will be co-designed with local GBT men and delivered in partnership to bring metro-based health experts out into our rural setting.
Each seminar focuses on topics identified as unsafe to discuss in mainstream men’s health contexts, such as sexual health and HIV/STI prevention, cancer and prostate health, mental health and ageing, dementia and same-gender partner/carer support, and finding LGBTIQ-inclusive local services. Sessions will also be streamed online for those unable to travel.
