National LGBTQIA+ Refugee and Asylum Seeker Coalition to be formed with support of a $20,000 Maddocks Foundation Grant

Pride Foundation Australia has been awarded a $20,000 Maddocks Foundation Grant to form a National LGBTQIA+ Refugee and Asylum Seeker Coalition.

The development of a coalition has been recommended by Pride Foundation Australia’s LGBTQIA+ Refugee and Asylum Seeker Advisory Committee due to the range of issues identified and the need to establish a national voice.

Members of the coalition will be formed from 3 groups:

  • people with lived experience of seeking asylum and/or refugee status, including representation from Forcibly Displaced People Network, and leaders from peer-led support groups and networks.
  • LGBTIQA+ organisations including philanthropy, service and advocacy groups —agreed members to date are LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, Many Coloured Sky and Pride Foundation Australia
  • refugee, asylum seeker and multicultural organisations—agreed members to date are the Migration Council Australia and Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS).

The coalition will advocate nationally in Australia for systemic change to reduce disadvantage and marginalisation of LGBTIQA+ asylum seekers and refugees.
