Kiama Illawarra Pride Choir: Participation in the Blackheath Choral Festival

The Kiama Illawarra Pride Choir is an inclusive choir for the LGBTQIA+ and allies in the Illawarra Shoalhaven area, for people of all ages and all abilities. The choir is multicultural and has members who identify as cis-gender, lesbian, transgender, gay, queer and questioning. The uniting focus is on the harmony they bring to singing as a choir and the harmony that comes to their lives through sharing their voices with one another and their audiences.

Kiama Illawarra Pride Choir have sung at community events, World Aids Day, ACON, Trans and Friends Festival, South Coast Rainbows events and the Wollongong Pride Market Day. They perform at general community events, most recently – International Women’s Day and the “Yes” Campaign for Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal People. The Choir work in partnership with other LGBTIQA+ community groups promoting Visibility, Diversity and Harmony in our community.

The Choir have received a PFA Small grant to support members to travel and participate in the Blackheath Choral Festival. Funds will support payment of Conductor and Accompanist Fees, Bus Hire and subsidise accommodation costs for members.

Kiama Illawarra Pride Choir is the only LGBTIQA+ choir participating in this event. It is important for members to perform and showcase their talents. Multiple benefits that come from performing as a community include:

  • Increased emotional connection within the group and with community
  • Increased confidence in being ones whole self
  • Feelings of Acceptance and Pride
  • Increased Wellbeing
  • Advocacy and outreach to other LGBTQIA+ people in community .
